Preparation and characterization of anion exchange membranes composed of quaternized chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) blend

Abstract:
Anion exchange membrane is the heart of alkaline direct methanol fuel cell(ADMFC). Through reaction of chitosan with (2,3-epoxypropyl) trimethylammonium chloride,quaternary ammonium groups were grafted onto the chitosan matrix successfully with high substitution degree (94.8%). A series of novel anion exchange membranes based on quaternized chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) blends were prepared and characterized. The morphology of the blend membranes showed that its structure was compact and uniform, which might lead to the decrease of methanol permeability. The ionic conductivity of these new anion exchange membranes rose with increasing content of quaternized chitosan. The ionic conductivity of the membrane containing 60% quaternized chitosan reached 2.5×10-2 S/cm at 80 ℃.The methanol permeability coefficients of the membranes were lower than that of Nafion 117.
