Abstract:
Polyethersulfones (PES) with three different molecular weights were chosen to prepare ultrafiltration (UF) membranes by the nonsolvent induced phase separation method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and nonwoven polyester fabric as additive, solvent and support material respectively. The effect of supporting and nonsupporting on the performance of the prepared ultrafiltration membranes was investigated by means of UF experiments, and the measurement of bursting strength. Based on the experimental data of PES molecular weight, thermodynamic phase diagram and cast solution viscosity obtained from gel permeation chromatography, cloud point titration and coaxial cylinder viscometer measurement respectively, the underlying causes of the experimental phinominon were accounted for from the combined perspective of thermodynamics and kinetics and polymer aggregate dimensions. It was found that compared with nonsupported membranes, membranes supported with nonwoven fabric are of higher permeability, lower rejection and higher strength.
