Pervaporation of Ethanol/Water Mixtures by PDMS / PVDF Composite Membranes with High Permeability

Abstract:
 Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) / polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membrane was prepared by casting PDMS solution onto polyvinylidene fluoride ( PVDF) porous membranes. The resulted PDMS/ PVDF composite membranes were applied for the pervaporation of ethanol/ water mixtures to determine the application feasibility for solid state fermentation.The effect of cross-linking temperature, operation temperature , ethanol concentration in feed and the permeation pressure on pervaporation performance was investigated systematically. The results showed that the permeation flux reached 281.36 g/ (m2•h) with separation factor of 8.23 at 60 ℃. As the operation temperature increased, the separation factor first increased, and then declined. But as the ethanol concentration in feed increased, the permeation flux increased. And as the downstream pressure of membrane declined, both separation factor and permeation flux increased.
