Design of membrane distillation module with energy recovery and study on the performance for desalination

Abstract:
In view of the lower thermal efficiency、high energy consumption of membrane distillation process,a new membrane module with energy recovery has been designed,the membrane module consists of hollow fiber membranes、heat exchange tubes and plastic wire mesh.The energies are recycled by the heat exchange tubes,and the hollow fiber membrane and heat exchange tubes are divided by the plastic wire mesh in order to reduce the heat conduction loss in membrane distillation process.An experimental investigation was carried out on concentrating aqueous solution containing 3.0% sodium chloride by using the membrane modul.The effects of the ratio of the hollow fiber membrane and heat exchange tubes、the air-gap thickness and the length of the membrane module on the water permeat flux、water gained-output-ratio(GOR) and thermal efficient were studied.The experimental results showed that when the feed temperature T1 was 40.0℃、T3 was 90.0℃ ,the feed flow flux was 10.0L/h,the Nd/Nm was 2:1,the length of membrane module was 0.85m,the air-gap thickness was 0.5mm,then the water permeat flux was up to 3.1L/(m2.h),GOR was 4.3 and the thermal efficient was up to 85%.
