Study on the molecular weight cutoff of ultrafiltration membrane:Comparison of two testing substances, dextran and protein

Abstract:
 This study used dextran and proteins as standard substances to investigate flat membranes and hollow fiber membranes rejection performance for different solute. The result showed that the measured MWCO was markedly higher than that ultrafiltration membrane manufacturers provided when dextran was used as the standard substance. The estimated reason was that dextran might have a chain structure which would help it penetrate the membrane pores. While the measured MWCO was nearly approaching to that ultrafiltration membrane manufacturers provided when protein was used. After comparing the trends of MWCO which different membrane deals with adjacent molecular weight substances, it occurs to us that the pore size distribution of various membranes have apparent differences. The single MWCO adopted traditionally failed to response interception performance of ultrafiltration membranes comprehensively.
