An Integrated Low Energy Comsumption HRNF-LPRO Membrane Process for Seawater Desalination

Abstract:
 The salt rejection in the first stage of current nanofiltration-reverse osmosis (NF-SWRO) seawater desalination process is not high, resulting in high operation pressure of second stage and high energy consumption. This study proposed the high rejection nanofiltration-low pressure reverse osmosis (HRNF-LPRO) desalination process. In the NF desalting experimental study, The overall Total Dissolved Solids(TDS) rejection of HRNF-LPRO process was 99.84%, when the TDS of feedwater was 34998mg/L and the operation pressure of the two desalination process were 2.6MPa and 1.4MPa, respectively. If the feedwater TDS was 34967.39 mg/L, ROSA simulation showed that the TDS of permeate should be as low as 231.17 mg/L and the overall energy consumption of product water would reduce to 3.264 kWh/m3. The HRNF-LPRO integrated process is of great significance for reducing the pressure of the second desalination process and the equipment requirements, saving costs of water production.
