Preparation of high-flux PDMS/PSf composite membrane for oxygen enrichment

Abstract:
 Poly(dimethylsiloxane)/polysulfone(PSf) composite membranes for oxygen/nitrogen separation were fabricated by the wet-coating method. The effects of PDMS concentration in the coating solution, and the pre-crosslinking time on the resultant PDMS/PSf membrane performance were systematically investigated. The relationships between the membrane formation and its permeability, and the coating solution viscosity as well as the PDMS molecular weight were further explored. The experimental results indicate that the membrane formability of the coating solution with low viscosity at low coating rate can be improved by increasing the PDMS concentration and performing a pre-crosslinking operation. In order to form compact selectivity layers, the viscosity of the coating solution should be higher than 1.75 mPa•s and the viscosity-average molecular weight of PDMS be larger than 85000. The oxygen permeance of the resultant PDMS/PSf composite membrane fabricated under the optimal critical conditions reached as high as 2197 GPU(pure gas)with the O2/N2 separation factor of 2.05 and 1543 GPU (air gas) with the O2/N2 separation factor of 1.70 which is much higher than the reported values in literatures.
