Inside the membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR), the counter-diffusional phenomenon of substrates has facilitated formation of distinct biofilm structure, highlighting the technical advantages in the field of biological nitrogen removal. In this paper, we firstly reviewed the characteristic of the nitrogen conversion and removal process and the optimized development. And then we summarized the operation principle and application status of MABR and further prospected the development tendency and direction.
