Preparation of hybrid membrane and its performance for uptaking Lithium

Abstract:
Spinel-type manganese oxide (SMO) Li1.6Mn1.6O4 was mixed with PVC, and then a new type of flat membrane was successfully prepared for recovering lithium from lithium-containing waters by a solvent exchange method. After the hybrid membrane was treated with an HCl solution, the membrane can uptake lithium, a series of experiments were given. As results showed, after the membrane was treated with an HCl solution it showed a good performance in adsorption capacity with a maximum adsorption of 29 mg•g-1 in six hours. When the adsorbed lithium was eluted by 0.5 M HCl, the lithium extraction reached the balance and about 95% lithium was extracted, and the rate of manganese dissolution is 3.5 %. The membrane showed good selectivity for Li+ in the competitive adsorption with Na+、K+、Mg2+、Ca2+. Repeated experiments showed that this new membrane had a good stability.
