Abstract:
Hydrophobicity of the membrane is a key factor for the membrane distillation process that affects product water quality and operation stability. This paper summarized the research progress of our research group on CF4 plasma modification of hydrophilic (UF and MF) and hydrophobic membranes for direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). The mechanism of CF4 plasma modification is illustrated as well as its impact on the performance and characteristics of originally hydrophilic and hydrophobic membranes. The effect of (super)hydrophobicity was proposed as it can increase the effective evaporation area and consequently increase the flux and energy efficiency in the DCMD process.
