Effect of PEG additive on morphology and performance of polysulfone membrane

Abstract:
 Polysulfone(PSF)membrane was prepared by using PSF/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) castingsolution and water coagulant. Effects of the content and molecular weight of PEG on the morphology, the mean pore radius(r), porosity(ε), pure water flux(PWF) and contact angel(CA) of PSF membrane were systematically investigated. SEM images of the PSF membranes showed that the teardrop-shaped pores disappearedand the thickness of the sponge layer near the top surface of the membrane increased as the content or molecular weight of PEG additive increased,. As the content of PEG400 increased in the membrane dope solution, r increased firstly, then decreased, and finally increased again; εfirst increased slightly, and then increased sharply; the trend of PWF was consistent with that of r. As the molecular weight of PEG increased, r increased firstly, then decreased slightly, and then increased sharply, finally decreased sharply;ε increased, and then decreased sharply; the trend of PWF was consistent with that of r. The CA of PSF membrane decreased when PEG400 content increased (>=16.8%) or the molecular weight of PEG increased (>=2000).
