Abstract:
Forward osmosis (FO) is a membrane process driven by the osmotic pressure gradient across a semi-permeable membrane. It is potentially applicable to sea water desalination, municipal waste water treatment and controlled drug release. The development of hollow fiber FO membranes is worthy of special focus both for membrane study and process application. Herein, a characterization methodology for hollow fiber FO membranes is presented with respect to characteristics of the support membrane, FO membrane pure water permeability (A), solute permeability (B) and structural parameter (S). The methodology introduced in this paper is applicable to flat sheet FO membrane as well.
