Separation of multiple organic compounds from aqueous solutions using SiO2 filled polyether block amide (PEBAX) composited membranes via pervaporation

Abstract:
 Polyether block amide (PEBAX) membranes filled with nano silica were prepared for pervaporative removal of ethanol, butanone, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) from water. The structure and internal morphology of the membranes were characterized by FTIR and XRD, respectively. The experimental results display that the filler is only physically blended with the polymer matrix and dispersed uniformly in the membrane. The permeation flux and separation factor of the unfilled composite membranes as follow: butanone > IPA> ethanol. The total flux and separation factor both increased first and then decreased with n- SiO2 increased. When nano silica filler content is 0.12 wt% and certain concentrations, the separation has the best results. The maximum separation factor of ethanol, butanone, IPA, mixtures were 5.11, 39.4, 6.08, 3.22 (enrichnment factor) respectively, and the total flux were 5.49 kg•m-2•h-1, 8.85 kg•m-2•h-1, 9.52 kg•m-2•h-1, 11.4 kg•m-2•h-1 with the composite membrane of PS-12 in different temperature.
