Abstract:
Polyamide nanofiltration membrane is widely used in the field of water treatment, and it is relatively stable to chlorine containing disinfectants. However, it is still reported that the polypiperazine amide nanofiltration membrane reacts with free chlorine in water. Therefore, understanding the chlorination mechanism of piperazine polyamide nanofiltration membrane is of great significance to the durability of membrane and the development of chlorine-resistant membrane. In this work, the changes of performance and properties of commercial piperazine polyamide nanofiltration membrane during chlorine oxidation were systematically studied, and the effects of chlorination on the membrane under acidic and alkaline conditions were analyzed. The chlorination mechanism of the membrane was explored by ATR-FTIR characterization and XPS analysis of the stripped polyamide active layer. The results showed that under alkaline conditions, N-chlorination, hydrolysis and ring-chlorination were the main chlorination degradation mechanisms. Under alkaline conditions, N-chlorination and chlorination promoting hydrolysis are the main processes. Because the oxidation capacity of the main active chlorine HClO under acidic conditions is higher than that of ClO- under alkaline conditions, the chlorine oxidation in acid condition leads to more serious degradation to the membrane structure. Alkaline condition contribute to hydrolysis of membrane. Under the two chlorination conditions, with the increase of CT value, the water permeability increased and the rejection of neutral organic compounds decreased, indicates a declining trend in membrane performance.
