Abstract:
The global consumption of lithium resources has increased significantly with the rapid development and extensive application of lithium-ion batteries. Great efforts have been devoted to develop efficient and sustainable lithium recovery technologies. The separation of Mg2+ and Li+ is the most challenging step in the whole lithium recovery process. Nanofiltration (NF) has promising application prospects in the field of salt-lake brine lithium extraction owing to the good Mg2+/Li+ selectivity, low energy consumption and small footprint. The review summarizes the investigations on commercial NF membranes for Mg2+/Li+ separation and discusses the effects of operation parameters on the separation performance. The rational design and fabrication of positively charged NF membranes for Mg2+/Li+ separation is discussed. The critical challenges are analyzed and the potential research directions are proposed, aiming at promoting the practical applications of NF technologies for lithium recovery from salt-lake brine.
