Preparation of PVDF/PZT blend membrane and its application in membrane bioreactor

Abstract:
 Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) blend membrane was prepared by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method with acetyl-tributyl citrate (ATBC) as diluent, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6]) and lead zirconate titanate (PZT) as additives. The effect of PZT doping content on the structure and properties of PVDF/PZT blend membrane was investigated by studying the microstructure, melting point, crystallinity and piezoelectric properties of the blends. The results demonstrated that the microstructure of the blend membrane with 4 wt% PZT consisted of spherulite and dense structures, and the dense structure led to the decrease of water flux. When the PZT concentration was 3 wt%, the porosity was 51.4%, the pure water flux was 333.8 L/m2·h, and the tensile stress was 3.53 MPa. Through high voltage polarization, the mixed matrix membranes(MMM) obtained higher piezoelectric characteristics than the PVDF membrane. When used in piezoelectric membrane bioreactor (MBR), the anti-fouling performance of the mixed matrix membrane was improved, and the flux was increased by 36.3%.
